Last weekend I asked everyone on a local photography forum ‘Sooo… what’s everyone shooting this weekend?’ I got various responses from weird bugs, to fire performers, portraits and book covers. I asked the question knowing I wouldn’t be shooting anything that weekend. I was going to be flying interstate with my partner to be with his family as his grandfather was dying. It’s rare for me to travel anywhere without even a basic camera, but this weekend I didn’t even think about taking one.

- Visual Literacy
‘Visual Literacy’. Roughly translated it means a person who can tell you exactly why your image is shit. When you find people like this, listen to them. When you find clients like this, buy them dinner and get them to draw you a flow chart with image references. Today a client gave me some feedback about all the images I delivered and the job as a whole. Tomorrow I'm going to buy him a burrito and a frozen margarita to say thank you.

Starting a business: Hardest F*^%#$ thing I’ve ever done in my life. Without fail. I had skills, talent and an idea. But I had no clue how to talk to clients, get clients, win jobs, quote for work, dress for shoots even! Boy, those early days of wearing Lycra superhero outfits to shoots were aaawkwaaaard… Now they’re over I think back to the things that have brought me the success I enjoy today. Number one on that list is mentoring. Actually, it’s not. Great food and red wine are equal number one. But mentoring is definitely right behind them.
