A Very Personal Post

Last weekend I asked everyone on a local photography forum ‘Sooo… what’s everyone shooting this weekend?’ I got various responses from weird bugs, to fire performers, portraits and book covers. I asked the question knowing I wouldn’t be shooting anything that weekend. I was going to be flying interstate with my partner to be with his family as his grandfather was dying. It’s rare for me to travel anywhere without even a basic camera, but this weekend I didn’t even think about taking one.

Port of Brisbane Shorebird Roost - Industrial Arc Photography

If you’ve ever been to the port of Brisbane you’ll know two things – it never stops and everything is huge.  So I was a tiny bit excited to shoot some stuff for their annual report.  The brief was to shoot images of their CEO & Chairman, one of their tenants Australian Container Freight Services and their shore bird roost.  Now I am a massive animal lover, but for some reason the ‘harmonious coexistence with birds’ gene seems to have skipped a generation with me. I think it got nudged out by the ‘insuppressible apetite' gene.

Brisbane Roar & Brisbane Airport - First Class Seats

Recently I had the opportunity to photograph a couple of Brisbane Roar players Thomas Brioch and Besart Berisha for Brisbane Airport's First Class Seats promo  It was a tough gig for them. They were forced to sit in really comfy chairs, get served food and drink by a gorgeous Pan Am inspired air hostie and pretend to be happy about it. They battled through.  They even found time to compare notes on what each other was wearing.

Visual Literacy

‘Visual Literacy’. Roughly translated it means a person who can tell you exactly why your image is shit. When you find people like this, listen to them. When you find clients like this, buy them dinner and get them to draw you a flow chart with image references. Today a client gave me some feedback about all the images I delivered and the job as a whole. Tomorrow I'm going to buy him a burrito and a frozen margarita to say thank you.

The House with No Furniture

I love furniture.  Robert Takken (of Takken Architects) does not.  Well, actually, I don’t know that for sure but having recently photographed a residential design of his in Brisbane where a family of four were yet to move in...  Let’s just say he was a pretty happy architect.  Although, truth be told, I was a pretty happy photographer, too.

Bespoke

My partner said to me yesterday 'you just used the word "bespoke" in general conversation'. I've been photographing a lot of architecture lately, which means I've been hanging around architects quite a bit. One in particular, who I hold utterly responsible for this present flourish of verbosity. But he's a bloody good architect. And he engages me to photograph his buildings here in Brisbane. So all is, of course, forgiven.

more done. more fun

Software engineers, sales people, customer service agents, open plan office.  You’re falling asleep already, aren’t you?  Well stay with me because I’ve got a man sized fish who’s a bee keeper in his spare time.  And the headless horseman.  Well, motorbike rider.

QLA - Queensland Literary Awards

Collector's Edition Commemorative QLA Jar

I shoot a few events every year, but not many of the make it to the blog.  Mostly because the images are relevant only to the audience I've shot them for, and because they're simple on camera flash type stuff.  Which, let's be honest, isn't that exciting. However, last night I shot the Queensland Literary Awards 2012 and I really want to share with you my experience of the evening.

The Secret Space

My house is not something out of a magazine - for example, in my perfectly styled bowl of limes atop my kitchen bench there is also a phone charger, the end of a curtain rod and Optimus Prime.  So shooting for the team at Sterling Interior Design Brisbane is always great because they design real world spaces that are beautiful and functional. It gives me hope that one day my (eaten straight from the tin) milo and spoon will find a home in a new kitchen.

Westpac Surf Lifesaving Rescue Helicopter QLD

Surf Lifesaving Westpac Rescue Helicopter Chief Pilot Peter Bird flying over the Gold Coast, QLD, Australia

It's not every day you get the chance to ride shotgun in the Surf Lifesaving Rescue Helicopter.  So when the chance came along I literally jumped it it.  Luckily the chopper was on the deck, so my arms remained in tact.  Which is useful.  Since I need them to take photos n' stuff.
